Michael woke up the next morning with a smile on his face. Instead of a jog, he used the elliptical in the complex's small weight room. Instead of eating it dry, he doused his cereal with milk. He skipped the mailbox and went straight to his car. On the highway, he scanned through various radio stations and settled for classic rock. He rolled down his window and let "Dream On" blast as loud as the speakers could go.
The bank was small and tidy. There wasn't a speck of dust to be seen on any of the tan surfaces. Only three people were in front of him as he waited to see the teller. His foot tapped anxiously as he hummed loud enough that the lady in front of him took a quick peek back.
"I'm sorry, just the first decent day in a while," he said. He couldn't figure out why it was a good day. Money had never been a motivation in his life, but it was still pleasant. He felt as if a weight had been lifted from his life.
The teller waved him over. "How may I help you today?" The teller asked.
Michael pulled out the folded note from Mimsy. "I'd like to check an account." He wrote down the number on a sticky note and slid it to the teller with his driver's license.
"Harvey Sinclair?" The teller asked.
"Oh, no." Michael slid a second license under the counter. The teller gave a questionable look and picked up both IDs examining them.
"I changed my legal name," Michael said as an explanation.
The teller hesitantly slid both IDs back under the glass. "Give me one moment."
Michael looked around the room. Nobody appeared to be having a day quite like his, and he loved it.
The teller returned with a folded half-sheet of paper.
"This is all that was in there. Would you like me to keep it in there?"
"I'd like it now, please."
The man slid the paper under the glass. "Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
Michael stood at the counter, unfolded the note. It didn't ruin his mood, but it certainly dampened it. It wasn't an inheritance or even monetary related at all.
All the note had was an address and a signature, "Love Mimsy."
