Chapter Sixty-Eight

"So, the man that owns the Dollar General picked them up?" Christine was still waking up as she entered the control room. Three agents were watching a single monitor. Stuart and Michael were in a car driving.

"Yes, he waited outside for nearly seven hours." The agent replied, not looking away from the monitor. "Even the guy working the desk at the hotel went out to talk to him. It was all bizarre."

"Maybe they bribed him with a twenty," another agent joked, smiled, then went back to his serious face when nobody else laughed. "We don't know how it happened, but they've gone there every day, so probably made an acquaintance."

Christine watched intently. Where were they going? This was the first time they'd left the hotel and gone anywhere except the store. They'd varied their route on occasion, but never their destination. They had modified their time as well, but this time of night was outside of their normal deviation.

"Stuart never alerted us, right?"

"Oh yeah, we just forgot to tell you," The second agent muttered sarcastically.

"Get out of the room," Christine wasn't putting up with it. The man's smile left. He stood up, gave a questioning look, and when he saw she was serious, left the room.

Christine watched the screen. They were heading out of the city. "Activate the agents on the North, get them down there. Put the agents at the house on standby."

She couldn't help but smile as they turned onto the hitman's street. They'd figured it out. Michael and Stuart had actually figured it out. It wasn't hard to figure out who the killer was. There was only one person in the entire town, driving a luxury car to work every day. After their lack of movement, she hadn't been sure if they were even trying to find their potential killer, but here they were heading directly to the house.

"Mam," the agent turned as the car passed the house. "Mam?"

"Hold the agents." Christine watched as the car continued down the street. "They're probably going to park and come back."

"Mam," the agent said again as the car made a turn. "I think they're heading to the highway."

Christine hit her fist on the desk. "Pull the agents from the house and send them after the car right now!" She yelled. She sprinted to the door and ran across the lawn to the car out front.

Michael and Stuart were going for the interstate. They were making a run for it. They disobeyed orders.
