Chapter Sixty-One

Gary paced in his cheap motel bedroom.

This wasn't right, it was crazy. How had they found her? And more importantly, how much did they know?

He pulled out his phone and stared at the blank screen. He couldn't decide if he wanted to make the call. Disappearing would be easy. It'd been done before, he could do it again. Nobody would know where he was. He could start over. But they'd done so much for him, he owed them at least a call.

A man's voice answered the phone. "Hello? Please tell me you have good news."

"No. I'm calling to let you know I'm out." Gary pulled the phone from his ear and jumped on the bed. He scratched his forearm feverishly before lifting the phone back to his ear.

"--Hello? Are you there?" the man's voice was desperate.

"I'm here," Gary replied.

"What do you mean you're out? You can't be out." The voice was stern. "I know things aren't happening as fast as we assumed they would, but we didn't even know what The Company needed Harvey Sinclair for. We just need to hold on long enough to find—"

"They found her. I was there today. The old lady. They know who I am." Gary blurted, stopping the voice on the other line.

After a moment, the voice responded, "What old lady?"

"You know…Dorothy." Gary gritted his teeth and quickly made his way to the window. He'd killed all the agents, right? He peered through the blinds. They hadn't followed him here had they? He scanned the parking lot to find nothing suspicious, but then again, they were probably waiting for him to leave.

"What do you mean they found her?"

"There were agents in her house. They were waiting there either for Michael or for me. I'm not sure, but either way, I know they know. I can't do this."

The line was silent for a moment as the voice on the other line processed the new information. "How did they find her? Why were they there? Did Michael say anything about this to you?"

"I'm not sure I told you about the agent that never leaves his side. Follows him around like a puppy. It's been difficult to talk to him. He disappeared the past few days, but I found him, and he's gone."

"We'll be ok."

"They know who I am. It only makes sense. They're trying to get to me. They will get to me. I need out."

"No," the voice said sternly, "This doesn't change the plan, it just changes our approach."

"It absolutely changes the plan." Gary paced the room, making quick, jerky movements.

"No. Their biggest asset is Michael. They're controlling him. We need him back. We have the leverage."

"Are you sure?" Gary was perplexed. They'd been so insistent that Michael should be left in the dark. They almost let him use the asset at the very beginning, but then called it off last minute.

"We need him back on our side." The voice continued, "Use his brother against him.”
